Barbara Taylor Szabo was born Barbara Ellen Taylor on Sunday, August 27th, 1950, in Mishawaka IN. and was a lifelong area resident. She was the first child of Kenneth Lyle Taylor (1921 – 2010) and Edna Louise (Love) Taylor (1925 – 1993). She had two brothers and one sister, Robert (1961 – 1969), Kimberley (1965 – 1969) and Douglas (1966 - ).
Barb attended John F. Nuner Elementary School and was a member of the 1968 graduating class at John Adams High School in South Bend, IN. For a time, Barb worked with her father at the South Bend Post Office.
On Saturday, May 5th, 1979, Barb married John Szabo in Osceola, IN. and she and John made Osceola their home.
In 1980, Barb welcomed her only child, a daughter, Eleanora (Ellen) Szabo. Ellen and her husband Michael Strycker provided Barb with 3 granddaughters, Clara, Lilly and Ivy.
Barb had many passions in life. First and foremost, her family, both past and present. Antiques and history were also among a few. She was an expert genealogist for more than 50 years of her life, was a member of the South Bend Area Genealogical Society, the La Porte County Genealogical Society and the La Porte County Historical Society. Barb was very proud of a wide variety of antiques that she acquired over her lifetime. The stories behind almost all of her collection could be heard simply by asking about them. She would share a wide range of information about them without the use of files or notes, the stories would flow straight from her heart to your ears. Barb wrote a 10-volume history of Christmas Seals (American Lung Association) from 1907 thru the present. She also wrote a 14-volume documentary of the artwork of a local artist and writer named Eunice Young Smith (1902 – 1993). She enjoyed auctions and antique stores, so much so that for a time she ran her own antique business, named Tidd-Bits of Time.
Barb endured many maladies throughout her lifetime, however none of these hindrances were life threatening and she lived a happy, full life.
Sadly, Barb passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 5th, 2022, at the age of 71 in her home of natural causes.
