George was a prominent architect in the Sioux City area, and completed several works in the city and in the several-state area. Some of his work can be found in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota. As of 2008, two buildings he designed can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. In Sioux City is the Mount Sinai Temple (aka the United Orthodox Synagogue), at 1320 Nebraska St. In Alcester, SD, off of SD Route 48 is the Baker House.

He was first part of the firm Burkhead & Reese. In 1900 the company was changed to G.W. Burkhead, Architect, and he continued operating his own firm from that point.
