John moved to Oswego (later changed to Lake Oswego), Oregon when he was 8 years old and graduated from Oswego High School in 1959. John joined the Coast Guard in 1961 and retired after 23 years of active-duty service as a CWO3. He went on to a second career retiring from Albemarle Heating and Air in Charlottesville, VA in 2005. John is remembered by family and friends as an avid golfer, musician, outdoorsman, and active member of his local church, Valley Covenant Church of God in Waynesboro.
John is survived by Linda Andrews, his wife of 47 years; his children, Karyn Andrews of Baton Rouge LA, Nancy Williams of New Orleans, LA, Dan Ireland and wife Christi of New York, NY, and Jerry Ireland and wife Paula of Virginia Beach, VA; his sister, Caroline Andrews Mitchell and husband Richard; his grandchildren, Jacob Ireland, Alaina Ireland, Addison Ireland, and Charis Ireland; his nephews, Stefan Andrews, Allen Andrews, Jeffrey Mitchell, Brian Mitchell, and Andy Mitchell; his nieces, Marci Wihlquist and Karen Jenson; and many loving friends and neighbors.
John was preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa "Tracy" Andrews; his grandson, Josiah; his parents, Frederick Barnes Andrews and Theresa Tegen Andrews; his brother, Fred Andrews Jr. and his wife Marj; his sister, Eunice Martin; and his nephews, Danny Andrews and Larry Andrews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 4:00 p.m., followed by a simple reception, at Valley Covenant Church of God, 291 Hopeman Parkway, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place.Memphis, Tennessee 38105-1942.
