Herschel H. Blackwell, Jr. passed away at his home in Austin, Texas on October 8, 2005. His family would like to thank the staff at Grace House, Austin, Texas for their love and care during his last few years.

He was born November 5, 1922, in Houston, Texas to Herschel H. and Ila Mae Blackwell. He had three brothers and one sister.

Present at Pearl Harbor, he served throughout the Pacific Theater during World War II. During his 25- year military career he also served in the Korean War and Vietnam. He was a patriot and one for whom the words "duty, honor, country" had a deep meaning.

He was active in the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Navy Squadron VP102/14 Association (Kaneohe Klippers), Veterans of Foreign Wars, Grand Lodge of Texas, A.F. & A.M. - Pleasant Hill Lodge 380, Arabia Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S. of Houston, Texas, Past Commandant of the Arabia Temple Legion of Honor, the American Legion and the Lions Club.

Herschel was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Anna L. Blackwell.

Herschel is survived by daughter, Patty Songster and her husband Hugh Songster of Waller, Texas; daughter, Peggy Price and her husband Ron Price of Austin, Texas; ten grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and brother, Allen Blackwell of New Caney, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 7:00- 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 12, 2005, at Canon Funeral Home, Waller, Texas.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 13, 2005, at Canon Funeral Home, Waller, Texas, followed by graveside services and burial at Canon Mathis Cemetery, Waller, Texas.
