Poet, Politician. He was regarded as one of the most prominent figures of Romanticism in Chinese classical literature. He was born in 340 BC in the State of Chu during the Warring States Period. In the time of King Huaiwang's reign, Yuan was a Left Minister for several years before he was exiled to the Han River. However he was reinstated and sent on a diplomatic mission to the State of Qi by King Huaiwang. Later during the reign of King Qingxiangwang Yuan was slandered by Prime Minister Zilan and was exiled to Yangtze River. After his 2nd and finale exile, he wrote and contributed to many of his classical poems like the Chu Ci. He was also thought to be bisexual or gay as he expressed his love for King Huaiwang in a few of his poems. on May 5, 278 BC the capital of the State of Chu, Ying was captured by the forces of the State of Qin, which caused Yuan to be so distraught that he waded into the Miluo River and drowned himself. Today there is a national holiday called the Dragon Boat Festival which is held at the end of May every year that honors the poet.
