Ethel Marie Fontenot was born August 2, 1925, in Kinder, Louisiana, to parents Clodies Fontenot and Barbara Ellen Gordon. She attended elementary through high school in Kinder, Louisiana. After high school, she attended Hotel Dieu in New Orleans and obtained a degree in Nursing. Ethel served in the USO Nurse Corp during WW2 at the age of 19 years old. She furthered her education, receiving a certificate in Nurse Anesthesia from Charity Hospital in New Orleans. After retiring from Anesthesia, she returned to Nursing and delivered compassionate patient care until she was in her mid 70s.
In 1954, Ethel married Anthony Sacker, and together they had three sons; David, Paul and John. Ethel was Pentecostal from her early childhood. She and her sons, David and John, received the Holy Ghost in 1975 in a mighty revival at Brother Clarke's church. There they were all baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, 1975.
Her hobbies included painting, crafts, decoupage, needle point, and genealogy. She contributed genealogical research with the Allen Parish Genealogy Society and was the founding editor of their Crossroads Newsletter in 2002. She logged many miles and hours on trips to courthouses, libraries, cemeteries and homes of relatives and friends. She completed the family histories of several family names on Family Treemaker, and then on Ancestry.com, having become quite the internet guru.
Ethel was a loving, Christian woman and was a giver all of her life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish Ethel's memory include her three sons, David Sacker and wife, Viktoria, Paul Sacker, and John Sacker and wife, Niki; and her three grandchildren, Jon David Sacker and wife, Sallie, Kiersten Whitten and Jordyn Mayfield.
Ethel is preceded in death by her father, Clodies Fontenot and his wife, Eve Landry; mother, Barbara Ellen Gordon (whom everyone called "Mama") and her husband, Fred Rostrom (whom everyone called "Uncle Fred", pronounced "Unkuh Fred"); the father of her three sons, Anthony Clarence Howth Sacker; older sister, Relia Sliman; oldest brother, Winfred Fontenot; half-sister, Evelyn Fontenot; and her younger sister, Margie Woodcock.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends may donate to the Allen Parish Genealogical and Historical Society and/or Brighton Bridge hospice.
