Azerbaijani statesman. He served as 1st President of Azerbaijan from May 18, 1990 to March 6, 1992. He also served in the same position from May 14, 1992 to May 18, 1992. He attended the Azerbaijan State Institute of Petroleum and Chemistry. He later was in charge of several factories. He also rose in the ranks of both the Azerbaijan Communist Party and Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic government. In 1989, he was appointed chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR. He served in this position until January 26, 1990, when he was appointed first secretary of Azerbaijan Communist Party, a position he held until September of 1991. In May of that same year, he was named the 1st President of Azerbaijan and served in this position until March 6, 1992, when he was forced to resign. He served a brief term as president in May of 1992, before being deposed by the Azerbaijan Popular Front. He later went into exile in Moscow until 2012, when he returned to his country with permission from President Ilham Aliyev.
