W. T. Whitford, 61; Stricken At Home
William T. Whitford, 61, of 47 Mill Street, a vestryman at St. John's Church for 12 years and a clothing salesman here for 44 years, died suddenly of a heart attack at home last night. He was stricken about 10 o'clock and the fire department rescue crew was called but he was dead on its arrival. Dr. Charles A. Serbst pronounced death due to natural causes.

Mr. Whitford was born in Providence, a son of the late Thomas and Pauline - Hertzog Whitford. He came to Newport with his parents when five years old. For a number of years, his parents conducted a hotel on Washington Square.

Mr. Whitford entered the employ of the late Isaac B. Bergman at the old Newport One Price Clothing Company on Thames Street more than 44 years ago. He remained there for 32 years up until the time that the business went out of business. He then worked at the Lawrence P. Sullivan clothing store for 12 years. He was at the store until 5 p.m. yesterday.

Active in the affairs of St. John's Church for many years, Mr. Whitford had served as a vestryman for the last 14 years. An Army veteran of World War I, he was a member of Newport Post. American Legion.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Sue S. Henry Whitford, he leaves a brother , Walter Whitford, of Newport, and a niece.

The funeral will be held Monday morning from the Memorial Funeral Home to St. John's Church for a requiem mass. The Rev. W. L. Fielding Haylor, rector, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Archie H. Burdick, superintendent of the Seamen's Church Institute. Burial will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Portsmouth.
