The following information has been compiled by myself, Jane Gilbert, a third great granddaughter, after doing extensive research on Henry and his wife Sarah "Sallie" Griffin. I felt it was important to put this information here to make sure it can be shared freely with descendants. This will be a work in progress as I learn more, especially based on DNA findings.
--------------

Sallie married Henry Russell on March 25, 1816 in Carthage, Smith Co., TN. In the War of 1812 pension application that was submitted on her behalf on 12 May 1879, she was stated to be 82 years old. This approximate birth year of 1797 is in general agreement with censuses that her birth year was 1795 - 1799. The 1850 census indicates she was born in Virginia, but the 1870 and 1880 census indicate it was North Carolina. I have reason to believe North Carolina is correct for reasons that will be cited below.

In the 1850 census, Sallie is living in Williamson County with husband Henry and youngest daughter Eliza. Henry died in 1854, and while the 1812 pension applications states she moved to Giles County after this death, she is not found there in the 1860 census, nor anywhere else. By 1870, she is living in Giles County with her son James and family , and she is also with them in 1880. In the 1880 census, she is indicated to be paralyzed. Her death date is unknown, as is her burial place.

Please see husband Henry's FindaGrave memorial for information on their children.

As to who Sallie was, a search of records in Smith County, TN where she married Henry provides only one small possible hint. There is a will in Smith County for a Joseph King who leaves a mule to the orphan Sally Griffin who he had taken in. Whether or not this is definitively her cannot be known, but the timing is right.

Descendants of Sallie via son James have a substantial number of more distant cousin matches with multiple descendants of a Thomas Griffin and Elizabeth Mullis of Anson Co., NC. Right now, I believe she was their granddaughter by one of their sons. As for her mother, there is also very strong DNA evidence that Sallie descended from a Joseph York and Martha Spinks. I believe she was likely their granddaughter as well.

I am still sorting through this as there is apparently a lot of bad information on these couples floating around. I will be trying to only used well-sourced information to make more progress on Sallie.
