Mrs. KATIE LAURA (KELLEY) THURMAN was the daughter of Professor Charles H. Kelley Sr. and Mrs. Frances (Gross) Kelley.

She was the wife of Dr. Howard Washington Thurman whom she wed on June 11, 1926 in LaGrange, Georgia.

To their union, a daughter, Olive Katherine Thurman, was born.

The family resided at 53 Ashby Street, S.W., Atlanta Georgia.

Katie worked as a housewife and as a school teacher.

She preceded her husband and their daughter in death.

Upon her passing, she was returned to her hometown where she was laid to rest on December 23, 1930 on the grounds of Eastview Cemetery #2.

Burial arrangements were managed by the undertakers with Ivey Brothers.

- Katie Kelley Thurman was the first wife of noted theologian Dr. Howard Washington Thurman. Katie was a 1918 graduate of the Teacher's Professional Course at Spelman Seminary (renamed Spelman College in 1924), graduating as a valedictorian. She begins work as an elementary school teacher in Birmingham, Alabama.
- Katie and Thurman were married on June 11, 1926 less than a month after he graduated from seminary. Their daughter, Olive, was born in October 1927.
