JEFFERSON - Graveside services for Melba A. Bockmon, 89, of Avinger, Texas, will be 10 a.m. today, December 31, 2007, at Pyland Cemetery, near Avinger, with Bro. Rex French officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Haggard-Heaster Funeral Home. Mrs. Bockmon died December 28, 2007, in Avinger.

Mrs. Bockmon was born August 1, 1918, in Lassater, Texas, to Sarah A. Cates Bennett and Samuel A. Bennett. She was a lifetime member of Lassater Baptist Church, now called Grace & Truth Independent Baptist Church. She was active in sports in school and excelled in basketball. She was a homemaker and always put her family first.

Mrs. Bockmon was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, James Carroll Bockmon.

She is survived by her children, Ronnie Bockmon and wife, Maria, of Avinger, Texas; James R. "Dicky" Bockmon and wife, Jeannie, also of Avinger, Texas; and Brenda Lou Smith and husband, Billy, of Jefferson, Texas; grandchildren, Alisa Pilkington, Teresa Oney, Amanda Smith, Trenton Smith, Kevin and Nathan Massey, Jennifer Madona and Janna Taylor; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
