Iris Hughes

Iris Hughes, 99, of Lubbock went to be with her Lord and savior on Thursday January 20, 2022. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday January 29, 2022, at Highland Baptist Church with Dr. Adam Pardue and Dr. Stan Blevins officiating. Graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the O'Brien Cemetery in O'Brien with Bobby O'Neal, brother of her sister-in-law, Jean Johnston officiating. Services are under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home of Plainview. The family will receive friends at Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock, 1420 Main Street from 6 until 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 2022.

Iris was born August 8, 1922 in O'Brien to the late Willie Gordon (Bill) Johnston and Serena Iris (Austin) Johnston. She married E. L. Hughes on March 20, 1943 in O'Brien. He preceded her in death on May 19, 2008 after sixty-five years of marriage. Iris was a housewife. Iris was involved with her family in the antiques business, which also included conducting estate sales. This business was run by the family for thirty years. This was something she enjoyed very much. Her life revolved around her family and her church. She was a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church and the Rachael Sunday School Class in Lubbock. Prior to moving to Lubbock, she was a faithful member of the O'Brien Baptist Church. Iris was also preceded in death by her brother Billy Gene Johnston.

Survivors include two sons, Ronnie and wife Shirley, and Stan; She was known as Granny to her four grandchildren, Christine Hill, Dawn Bruns, Shawn Hughes and Brandon Hughes; six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. One brother, Dwayne Johnston & wife Jean, and sister-in-law Ida Dean Johnston; Iris is also survived by her nieces, Debbie Ivey, Jeanine Johnston, Cyndy Williams her nephew, Nick Johnston; her uncle, Donis Austin as well as many cousins and other loving family members.
