Searchers Locate McFillen's Body
The body of Osmer Douglas (Doug) McFillen was recovered from the lake at 6:46 p.m. Monday 75 yards from the spot where his plane crashed early Saturday morning.
The 47-year-old pilot, along with Calcasieu Sheriff's Deputy John Henry Monk, were enroute to Ft. Leavenworth, Kans., when their twin-engine Piper Comanche suddenly crashed in about nine feet of water. Monk's body was recovered shortly after.
McFillen's body was discovered between the wreckage site and the beach by two volunteer searchers, C. W. Evans, 2015 Gulfway Road, West Lake, and Dale Goodman, 1732 Elm St.
Numerous groups were involved in the search along with individuals. Conducting the lengthy search for McFillen's body were the Calcasieu, Cameron and Harris County, Tex., sheriff departments and the enforcement division of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission from two parishes.
Funeral services for McFillen were to be at 4 p.m. today in Hixson North Chapel with the Rev. Merlin Merrell, pastor of University Methodist Church, and Rev. James Stovall, pastor of First Methodist Church of Lafayette, co-officiating.
Burial was to be in Highland Memory Gardens.
Born in Gladstell, Tex., McFillen had lived in Lake Charles for 26 years. He was owner and operator of McFillen's Air Park, and pilot for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Department.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Nola Mae McFillen; one son, Marshal Douglas McFillen; and one daughter, Susan Elizabeth McFillen, all of Lake Charles; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. McFillen Sr. of Moss Bluff; one sister, Mrs. E. W. Whittaker of Moss Bluff.
Also, four brothers, John H. McFillen Jr. of San Antonio, Tex., E. G. McFillen of Lake Charles, Wyman E. McFillen of Houma and Herman L. McFillen of Oklahoma City, Okla. and one granddaughter.
Pallbearers were to be Ken Cormier, John Scott Doyle, Ted Trammel, Steve Nicholson, Jay Thornton, Dickie Willet, Jerry Goos and Wayne McElveen.
Honorary pallbearers were to be Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Henry A. Reid Jr. and parish deputies.
