John Akins was the namesake of his father, John Akins. His mother was the former Sarah Oliver.

He was born in Buncombe County, NC. When his father won land in the Georgia Lottery and migrated, John Junior accompanied him as did several of his siblings.

On March 16, 1843, the younger John Akins married Lydia Reese in Union County, Georgia. The couple had several children. Enumerated on the 1860 Census were: Andrew, twins William and Ezekiel, Jasper, Joseph, Elizabeth, and Sarah. Their son, Benjamin David Akins, was born in 1861.

John Akins, Jr. fought in the Civil War. He and his son, Andrew Jackson Akins, were listed on the Civil War Muster Rolls of Georgia. Also listed on that same Muster Roll were his relatives, Frank, Tom, and Job Self. Frank Self was his brother-in-law: he married John Jr's sister, Easter. Tom and Job were their sons.
