Astronaut. He flew on 3 NASA Space Shuttle missions during his NASA career, STS-53 that launched on December 2, 1992, STS-59 which launched on April 9, 1994 and STS-76 that launched on March 22, 1996 to the Russian space station Mir. He distinguished himself by becoming one of the first astronauts to perform a spacewalk while docked to an orbiting space station. During his career as an astronaut he logged 27 days, 18 hour and 24 minutes in 443 orbits of the earth. Prior to becoming an astronaut he attended Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, Utah (1970), the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York (1974) and Georgia Institute of Technology (1982). He served in the United States Army after graduating from West Point and he attended the U.S. Army Aviation School in 1976. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in 1986 as a experimental test pilot and retired from military service in 1995. When he left NASA in 1997 he accepted a position with Boeing as their Space Station Flight Operations Manager. He passed away from complications of Parkinson's disease.
