Albert Leroy Van Wright, Sr., born to Drucilla Bell and Beaver Van Wright on April 24, 1939 in Moncks Corner, S.C. and after a lengthy illness departed this life on December 30, 2005 at his home.

Al married his high school sweetheart, Diane Smith. Two children were born to this 45 year union, Albert, Jr. (Kumba) and April Lynn. The Van Wright family relocated to Bristol, Pa. As a child he attended Bethel AME Church in Bristol, Pa., and later became a member. Al attended the public schools in Bristol Borough, graduating from Bristol Junior Senior High School with numerous scholastic achievements and as an Honor Student. Albert became an avid, outstanding athlete. He was one of Bristol High School's all around athletes in the 1950's and as known and recognized as a prominent three sport athlete, including being instrumental in leading the Warriors to many State Championships. This led to the honor of being inducted into the Hall of Fame in the 1970s.

Al Van Wright also received numerous civic and community honors. In October 2001m a weight room was dedicated and named for him by the Businessmen Association at Bristol High School, in his honor. Recently, a Letter of Recognition from the Bristol Borough Athletic Association commended him for his outstanding sports contributions. Albert's great love for sports included being a state referee. However, his greatest pastime was for golfing. He was an original founding member of Les Stroke Golf Club and his membership in the Les Strokes Golf Club afforded traveling as far as Myrtle Beach, S.C. his favorite golf course. He was affectionately known as "Boomer" to most members.

He was employed as a Plumber Pipefitter at US Fairless Steel for many years before retiring. When the Steel Mill closed, Albert pursued employment at Rohm and Haas as a Plumber Pipefitter but recently retired from this job also. Albert was a hard working husband, father and provider.

Albert's father, Beaver and oldest brother, James preceded him in death. Those who remain to cherish fond memories are his wife, Diane formerly of Burlington, N.J. to whom he was married 45 years; one son Albert, Jr. (Kumba) of Bristol, Pa., one daughter, April Lynn Johnson and her husband, Kelvin of Philadelphia, Pa., his mother Drucilla B. Van Wright of Langhorne; three brothers, Robert and his wife Eunice of Willingboro, N.J., Wayne of Bristol and Clarence of Morrisville; one sister, Evangelist Drucilla M. of Morrisville, Pa., one granddaughter Hillary Sopczak of N.Y.; four grandsons, Brian, Brandon, Brahin Williams of Bristol, Ryan Van Wright of Delran, N.J.; one great granddaughter, D'Ajanai Williamsport, Pa., mother-in-law Evelyn Smith of Burlington, N.J., sister-in-law Lillie Mae Smith of Burlington, N.J.; his buddy and a devoted cousin Fred Williamson, Jr. and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral service on January 5, 2004 at 1:00 pm at the Bethel AME Church, 254 Wood Street, Bristol. A viewing will be held, Tuesday, January 4, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. and again 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Bristol Cemetery. Arrangements by the Molden Funeral Chapel, Inc. 133 Otter Street, Bristol.
