Vallée's followup, The Young Victoria (2009) garnered strong reviews and received three Academy Award nominations. The director went to the next level with the film, Dallas Buyers Club (2013), the fact-based story of Ron Woodroof, who sold experimental drugs to AIDS patients. It earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Film Editing for Vallée and led to trips to the podium for stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto (winning the Oscars for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively). Vallée directed and executive produced HBO's star-studded adaptation of Big Little Lies, launching its first season in 2017. He earned an Emmy for his directing work on the highly lauded show's first season. Other directing work includes the films: Wild (2014), Demolition (2015), and the HBO miniseries, Sharp Objects (2018). He died from an apparent heart attack at his cabin outside of Quebec City. He was 58.
