She had an older sister, Merle and a younger sister who died at a young age. The 2 girls stayed with their grandma Barker and saw their father on weekends when he came from work in Pontiac. He would ride the bus to Mason, and walk out to the Barkers for the weekend. Some times someone would pick him up and give him a ride.
Irene married William Azeltine and they had 3 daughters, Verlee, Marie, and Lorene.
One morning, just as the 3 girls were waiting for the school bus, William shot Irene and then himself. A neighbor called the police and the paramedics. The 3 girls were raised by relatives, Mildred and Laurence Osterlee, who taught them the Christian way of Life.
Irene is buried in the Hawley Cemetery, as is Verlee.
