James had an unfortunate accident as a child that cost him his ability to speak. He was very well known around Clayton, Ga in the 50s and 60s because he was so friendly. During the day he would get out and walk around visiting all of the shopkeepers in town.

He loved for my dad, who was his cousin, to visit. I remember when we visited him and his mom in Clayton after his dad died, he had a guitar he had received for Christmas and everytime dad would visit he would bring that guitar to dad and get him to play it for hours for him. I could play one myself but when dad would hand it off to me to give himself a break, James would get it and hand it back to my dad- didnt want nobody but my dad playing it! James would shake his finger at me like "no, no, you cant do that!". Dad would usually put him a fresh set of strings on it when he would visit him. We didnt get to visit them a lot because dad was a trucker and spent a lot of his time on the road. Mom never drove a car so we pretty much depended on Uncle Hubert or grandpa Penland (shown in the picture with James) to get us where we needed to go, until I got a license, while dad was gone.

James is actually buried in Head of TN Cemetery, Dillard, Rabun County, Ga with his parents, James Ralph and Stella Penland Carter
