Info from Forest Rose Database:
Richard was born & raised mostly in Fairfield Co., the son of Harry Paul Craner/ Kraner born in Pickerington & Alvah Marie Miesse of Greenfield Twp. who married on July 20, 1920. Harry's father was Frank W. Craner/ Kraner who was Sheriff of Fairfield Co. from 1905-1909.
The family moved to Los Angeles, California, however, his parents divorced before 1930. He & his mother moved back to Fairfield Co. near her parents and she married Elmer A. Jones. Richard's father remarried, had three step-children & relocated to Tillamook Co., Oregon.
Richard's mother died at age 38 when he was 17. He went to Oregon to reunite with his father who was a WW I Veteran. Richard was 6'1. He enlisted at Fort Lewis, Washington as a private in the 330th Signal Corps. in the Army on June 29, 1941 before Pearl Harbor during World War II.
However, Pvt. Craner was captured during the Bataan Death March after the Battle of Bataan (Batan Shi no Koshin). This unfortunate tragedy occurred in the Philippines when 90,000-100,000 American and Filipino prisoners were marched by the Japanese for 60 miles from Mariveles to Camp O'Donnell, the Cabanatuan prison camp in the province of Tarlac where Pvt. Craner died, 360 days after he enlisted. Wide-spread abuse of prisoners occurred, and Richard fell victim along the way. His body was brought back seven years later.

Monument incorrectly states: "Died during Bataan Death March", but he died in the Camp O'Donnell, the Cabanatuan prison camp in the Phillipines
