SOURIS FARMER PASSES MONDAY, RITES THURSDAY

Robert James Foster, Souris farmer, passed away in the local hospital Monday, following several months illness. Death was caused by heart trouble. A resident of Scandia township for 37 Years, Foster, came to this section about 1900 from Hillsboro, where he had been a harness maker for several years. Born at Tara, Ontario, he came to the United States in April of 1888. He is survived by five children: Robert S. Foster of Souris, Wilfred H. Foster of Manila, Phillipine Islands, Elmore Y. Foster of Lyons, Kansas, Verne O. Foster of Bottineau and Mrs. Wesley Counts of Souris. He is also survived by William H. Foster, Wilbert Ennis Foster, and Elizabeth Ward, brothers and sister. Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian church of Souris Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. Masons will conduct services at the cemetery. Church services will be in charge of Rev. Risser and Rev. McBain.

Robert James "Bob" Foster, the son of Robert and Eliza Foster, was born in 1860 in Ontario. In the late 1880's he moved to Hillsboro and established a harness making shop. In 1901 he married Sarah Larson at Hillsboro and moved to Souris where Bob opened a harness making shop on main street. He also homesteaded in Scandia Township one and one half miles west of Souris, and soon Bob and Sarah became full-time farmers. Their children all attended school in Souris, and prior to 1930 the trips to and from school were made by horses. Robert died in 1938 and Sarah some time later.
They had six children, all now deceased except the youngest one: Grace E. was a teacher; Robert S. remained on the farm; Wilfred H. was a retired army man; Elmore Y., a meat cutter by trade, served in the Navy; Verne O. was a deputy sheriff in Washington; and Mable (Mrs. Donald Smith) of Souris.
