Carl Melvin Woodfill, 81, of Madison, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

He was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Jefferson County, the son of Manly and Florence Ryker Woodfill. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He retired from Teton Corp. in 1987 after 25 years in the contracting industry. He was also a farmer. He attended Hanover Christian Church before moving to Ryker's Ridge Baptist Church. He was a 60-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, a 35-year member of the Ryker's Ridge Fire Co., a member of the Union Lodge 2 F & AM, Order of Eastern Star, Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion, and a charter member of the Ryker's Ridge Water Co. In 1976, he received the Midwestern Carpenter of the Year award and was awarded the Caleb B. Smith Medal of Honor in 1985 for restoring the Schofield House, which was the first meeting place of the Indiana Masons. In 1997 he received the Indiana Fireman of the Year and in 1991, the Ryker's Ridge Fireman of the Year. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Mary America Ashby Woodfill; three daughters, Mary Margaret Dean of Madison, Judy E. Bellamy of Deputy and Cindy L. Cole of Madison; three sons, Michael Woodfill, Carl D. Woodfill, Dennis K. Woodfill, all of Madison; one brother, William Woodfill of Madison; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Robert G. Woodfill.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lytle Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens. The honor guard of Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion will conduct military honors graveside.
