Daniel William Rotzoll was born on May 1, 1949 and went on to receive his inheritance in eternal life with Jesus on November 16, 2021. Dan left behind a legacy of Christ-centered love and service for the many who knew him.
Dan was first and foremost a man who followed after his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His family would tell you that you'd find Dan at his dining room table early every morning, spending time in God's word and praying for those he loved as well as the world around him. His love of Jesus and knowledge of the saving grace that Jesus offered him is what drove Dan to serve others.
Dan prioritized his family and he loved his wife Susie over the course of a 40-year marriage! If you asked him to name his favorite part of creation, he'd tell you it was his precious bride. It was his joy to serve in the marriage ministry at Willow Creek Community Church with Susie for many years where they mentored engaged couples, teaching them how to center their marriage around Christ. Dan was known as "Dad" to Carrie (Larry) Murphy, Jamie (Luke) Baker, and JD (Chelsea) Rotzoll. As the three kids sat with him in the days before he left this Earth, they laughed and reminisced about all of the great memories they shared with Dad. Dad provided wisdom, laughter, love and so much more for his kids. Dan was known as, "Papa" being grandpa to Zach, Bekah, Levi, Lily, Niya, Ayla, and Clara. He was a fun Papa and his grandkids always looked forward to seeing him. Dan also was a big brother to Nancy (Ched) Scheitler and he loved her dearly. He enjoyed when they would share what each of them was learning from God's word. Dan was preceded in his Earthly death by his parents, Jeanne and Rudy Macchione. His family is most certainly hurting in his absence, but Dan was so focused on loving them in life that his legacy is strong with them and will undoubtedly carry forward for generations to come.
Dan enjoyed a career in public education, serving for 35 years as a P.E. and Driver Education teacher as well as a football and track & field coach at Maine East High School in Park Ridge, IL. His love of sports started young, playing football at Taft High School in Chicago before continuing on to play on scholarship for four years at the University of Illinois. Dan followed in his dad's footsteps by attending U of I and teaching at Maine East as well as working with his dad at their own concrete business for many years. He was a hard-worker and meticulous in all that he did, teaching his kids, students, and athletes to do the same.
When the family asked for help in sending Dan encouragement in his last days, his family, friends, students, and athletes reached out with many messages of support and love. Dan knew he was loved. Proverbs 27:17 states, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." It was important to Dan that he be one who sharpens others through encouraging words, and the family wishes to thank all those who reached out to sharpen Dan as he went on to be with the Lord in Heaven. Special thanks to all of Dan's brothers in Christ who have walked with Dan throughout his life. While we mourn the loss of Dan being here with us, we have joy knowing he is in Eternity with his Savior, Jesus!

It is likely that Dan battled Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), causing a myriad of symptoms that grew more intense later in his life. Dan's family has connected with the Concussion Legacy Foundation (concussionfoundation.org), and Dan has made a donation to help further research for this disease. This goes to show that Dan was a giver – even after his body passed on. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please consider giving to an organization that was close to Dan's heart: Today in the Word (www.todayintheword.org) so that others may soak in the Word of God that Dan held onto so tightly.
A visitation for Dan will be held on Monday, November 22nd from 3pm – 9pm at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd., Mt. Prospect, IL. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, November 23rd from 9am – 10am followed by a service, burial, and celebration of Dan's life. The family welcomes wearing your Maine East, U of I, or favorite sports attire for the service (minus anything Packers or Michigan) – come as you are.
