HOUSTON – Rodolfo Angel Peña, 23, was an aspiring model and psychology student from Laredo, Texas, who dreamed of one day becoming a US Border Patrol agent or seeing where his charm and good looks take him.
On Friday, he and a few friends drove the five-hour drive from Laredo to Houston to let off steam at Travis Scott's show at the Astroworld festival. On Saturday afternoon, his family was preparing for his funeral.
Peña was one of eight people who died on Friday night when thousands of spectators rushed onto the stage to see Scott, crushing security and creating a chaotic nightmare.
Her older brother, Guadalupe Peña, said authorities only told the family that her brother died of cardiac arrest while at the show.
"He's a really strong person," he told USA TODAY. "I know he would have gotten away with it. It seems really vague how it happened."
Guadalupe Peña shared details of her brother's life in the lobby of a Houston hotel on Saturday, as her mother paced nearby, whimpering every now and then.
"The one who suffers the most is his mother," he said.
The youngest of five siblings, Rodolfo Angel Peña was a star catcher at Nixon High School in Laredo and was in his senior year at Laredo College, he said. He was taking psychology classes, hoping to land a well-paying job with Border Patrol or with US Customs and Border Protection. He also worked as a chiropractic therapist.
He was well known and loved throughout Laredo, said Eduardo Peña, his other brother. "Everyone knew him," he says.
Rodolfo Angel Peña loved dancing and was in fashion, said Guadalupe Peña. And he loved music. He attended the last Astroworld Festival in 2019, but it was his first Travis Scott concert, he said.
The family were planning a funeral for him in Laredo. They still had a lot of questions about her brother's death, Guadalupe Peña said.

Rudy leaves behind his parents: Maria de los Angeles Peña and Daniel Alberto Salinas; siblings: Jennifer (Sergio Gonzalez) Peña, Diana Peña, Eduardo "Lalo" Peña, Guadalupe Peña, Jr., Randy Peña, Ashley Peña, Danny Salinas, Jr., Laura Salinas as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, many friends and an extended family.
Rudy was born in Laredo, Texas on October 15, 1998 to Guadalupe and Maria de los Angeles Peña and was raised in Laredo, where he attended local schools, his pride and joy being a J.W. Nixon High School Varsity Football player, sporting jersey #19. Upon his high school graduation in 2018, he furthered his studies in the hope of one day joining the United States Border Patrol. He was attending Laredo College to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice and concurrently was employed as a Physical Therapist. Being the athlete that Rudy was, he enjoyed "Friday Night Lights", attending most of the games here locally, always supporting his JW Nixon Mustangs. Although Rudy had many positive attributes, the one attribute that stands out above all the rest was his contagious, warming, sincere smile. God gave our Rudy the purest heart and shone his light for us and hope for salvation through Rudy's smile. Being social, loving music and dancing, as well as the love for family will forever be remembered by every person who had the privilege of knowing Rudy. Today, we gather to mourn, just as the bible teaches us in Revelation 21:4 "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." For now, we continue on this journey without Rudy, but hold his memory in our hearts and minds. Our world has been shattered and we find our comfort with the prayers of those who have extended to us the sincerest of condolences. We continue to pray for all the other victims in the hopes that their memories will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace dearest Rudy, until we meet again, may your memory forever be a blessing unto us all.

A Graveside Service and Interment will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the Laredo City Cemetery.
