US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from both the 5th and 4th District of the state of Iowa from January 3, 1959 to January 3, 1995. He served in the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War and received several medals including a Purple Heart, After his military service, he went on to both the University of Missouri and Syracuse University for undergraduate training. He then attended Drake University, where he earned his law degree. Before entering politics, he served as an assistant county attorney for Polk County, Iowa. In 1958, he ran, as a Democrat, for a seat in the United States House of Representatives representing the 5th District of Iowa and was successful in the general election in November that year. He went on to serve eighteen terms in the House before losing his re-election battle in 1994 to Republican Greg Ganske. During his House tenure, he sponsored a federal anti-nepotism law in 1967 and also served as chairman of both the House Special Committee on Campaign Expenditures and House Committee on Small Business.
