Henry Keifer, David Keifer's brother, participated in the battles at Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania (including the assault at the Bloody Angle), the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and probably the beginning of Petersburg. He had a thumb shot off while standing guard duty sometime in late June or early July, 1864. He was given a furlough and returned to his family in Pennsylvania. He died of dysentery two weeks later, on July 14, 1864 aged 34.
