Martha Jane Clayton Bell passed away on October 4, 2021. She was born November 7, 1932, in Kerens, Texas to John Cowan and Edith Olive Wilkes Clayton. After graduation from Kerens High School, she attended Southwestern University in Georgetown. On December 24, 1950 she married Joe Frank Bell of Hubbard.
While raising their six children, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University and a Masters of Education from Tarleton State University. This was the beginning of a long career in education. Martha taught high school English and art in a number of school districts in Florida and Texas. She then served as principal of Hubbard High School for numerous years. Following her retirement, she continued teaching at TSTC, McLennan Community College, Hill College and Navarro College.
Always creative, her talents were many and varied. She was one of the first teachers in the Head Start program. For several years she reported the local news on KHBR Radio from her home in Hubbard. She was a talented painter and locally taught painting classes. She enjoyed sewing, but her passion was quilting with the Quilters for Christ at the First United Methodist Church of Hubbard where she was a member. Other interests included gardening, reading, singing and genealogy. As her children grew up, Martha made a welcoming home for them and their friends. She will be remembered for her generosity and sense of fairness.
