William Bethel was the son of John Bethel (1726–?) and Ann Hobbs (1726–1820). He was the brother of Mary Ann Bethel (1763–1821). He married Ann McBride (1767–1835) in abt 1784 in Offerlane Parish, Co. Queens (Leix/Laois), Ireland. They emigrated to Quebec and settled in Valcartier, where William was granted land for a farm. They had 6 children: Mary Bethel (1785- Aft 1859), Margaret Bethel (1786–1867), Phebe June Bethel (1788–1874), William Bethel (1798–1845), Thomas Bethel (1800–1832), and John Bethel (1802–1859).
