William Lum Yancey married twice. Both women had the same name, but different surnames. They were also cousins. Lum and Martha Glaphira Abernathy had two children; Robert Theodore and Molly. Martha Glaphira Abernathy Yancey died in 1873 and he married Martha Glaphira McLard. They had no children together.

Martha Glaphira McLard was the sister of Miles Augustus McLard. Miles wife died and left him with several children. He gave his daughter Jessie McLard age two to William Columbus Yancey and his sister Martha Glaphira McLard Yancey to raise. When Jessie was 21, she married Robert Theodore Yancey (son of William Columbus Yancey and Martha Glaphira Abernathy Yancey)(who she grew up with).
