Politician. He served as the fifth president of the Malaysian Indian Congress from 1955 to 1973, and the Minister of Labour of Malaysia from 1955 to 1957. He is one of the leading Indian leaders who played a prominent role in the independence movement in Malaya. Born in Sungai Siput, Perak, he attended Clifford High School in Kuala Kangsar, Perak and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Annamalai University in India. In 1953, he organized the Perak United Indian Council with the intention of uniting the Indian community. He was elected the chairman of the Malaysian Indian Congress in that same year. In 1955, he was elected a member of the legislative council for the Kinta Utara constituency.
