VETERAN EATON UNDERTAKER DIES

Services for L.P. Barnes, 84, veteran Eaton funeral director, were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Barnes Funeral Home. Burial was in Mound Hill cemetery.

Mr. Barnes had been ill for the last two months. He died Monday.

He had served as president of the Eaton school board at the time the Eaton high school was constructed and was a charter member and past president of the Eaton Lions club.

He was also past president of the Fourth District Ohio funeral Directors association, a life member of Port Washington Lodge, F & A.M. and a funeral director for 55 years.

A 45 year resident of Eaton, Mr. Barnes was a member of the Eaton Congregational church.

Surviving are his wife, Amelia; two sons, Walter M. and Robert W., both of Eaton; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Phares and Mrs. Florence Becker, both of Eaton and Mrs. Grace Hogan of San Diego, Calif.

Death Comes To Prominent Citizen

ONE OF EATON'S prominent citizens and retired business men, L.P. Barnes, 84 years of 231 East Somers street, died at 7:35 Monday morning following an illness of two months. He was the son of the late Huston and Mary Ann Kennedy Barnes.

He had been a licensed funeral director for the past 55 years, establishing his business in Eaton 45 years ago, when he selected this village as a residence. He and his family came here from Gnadenhutton, Ohio where he was in the funeral service and furniture business. Two years later in 1920 he purchased the funeral service business interest of the late Andrew Coffman. In 1952 he retired from the business as an active member and his two sons; Walter M. and Robert W. Barnes assumed the ownership and management. They have since been joined by a grandson of the founder, Robert C. Barnes.

Mr. Barnes was very active in all village affairs, having been a Charter member of the Eaton Lions Club and a past president. He held membership in that organization for 41 years. He was also a past president and member of the Fourth District Ohio Funeral Directors' Association, and was a past president of the Eaton Board of Education. He served on this board during the construction of the high school building. Mr. Barnes held a life membership in the Port Washington Lodge F. & A.M. and the local Order of the Eastern Star and he was a member of the local Congregational Christian Church.

Survivors include the widow Amelia; two sons, Walter M. Barnes and Robert W. Barnes, both of Eaton; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Phares and Mrs. Florence Becker of Eaton, and Mrs. Grace Hogan of San Diego, California; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Fay Barnes of Eaton; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, J.F. Barnes of Uhrichsville, Ohio. two sons preceded him in death, Edward Cecil in 1918 and Paul Francis in 1960.

FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation hours are Wednesday afternoon after two o'clock. Burial will be in the Mound Hill cemetery.
