Musician and Songwriter. Known as, "The Storyteller," he grew up in the small Eastern Kentucky town of Olive Hill. His long career of song crafting began as a teenager when he formed the Bluegrass band The Kentucky Travelers. Following a short service in the United States Army, he became a disc jockey at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. His big breakthrough in music came a few years later when Grand Ole Opry alumnus Jimmy Newman recorded one of Hall's early compositions. Following this success, he relocated to Nashville to become a professional songwriter for Newman's publishing company. Over the span of the next two decades he composed several major hit songs including: "Harper Valley PTA," "A Week in a Country Jail," "Watermelon Wine," "I Like Beer," "Little Bitty," and several others. Twelve of Hall's compositions became No. 1 hits, while another twenty-six achieved Top 10 status. For his work, he was inducted into several prestigious institutions including the Grand Ole Opry, Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame, Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In addition, he was a Grammy recipient, and, with his late wife Dixie, was a twelve time winner of the Bluegrass Song Writer of the Year Award.
