Less than four months later he was wounded at the Battle of Shilo, 6 Apr 1862. On 7 Apr 1862 he was sent to Savannah, Tn. for treatment. In Nov of 1862 he was detached to the 1st Minn. Battery. James stayed detached untill he mustered out 24 Dec 1863 in Vicksburg Miss., with $100.00 wages. His records show he didn't finish his 3 year commitment. His head stone shows he was with Co. E, 16 Reg't, Wisconsin Infantry.
