Harriet was declared to be a ward of Thomas Coffer in 1835 in Fairfax County, VA. She may have been a student at the Springdale Boarding School for Girls, in Loudon County, after it was opened in 1839, by Samuel McPherson Janney. Mr. Janney married her to George Harris Cummins on 21 January 1845 at his home in Springdale, Loudon County, VA.

She moved with her husband to the Lubeck area of Wood County, WV in 1849. She was baptized at the Bethel Baptist Church on 13 Dec 1853. She was the mother of at least seven children and lived her life in the Lubeck area. She died from Bright's Disease and is buried in the Bethel Church cemetery.
