OLIVEHILL, TN - Arnold John Ahonen, age 87, of Olivehill, Tennessee, and former Marquette resident, entered eternal life to be with his Lord Jesus, Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Hardin Medical Center in Savannah, Tennessee.
Born January 21, 1934, in Ironwood, Michigan, a son of John David and Tynne Marie (Salo) Ahonen, Arnold was raised in Ironwood. He learned the value of hard work and developed a strong work ethic working for his father who was a logger. At age 14 he was working in the woods and driving logging trucks. He graduated from the Luther L. Wright High School in 1952 and enrolled at Northern Michigan University. On September 11, 1954, Arnold was united in marriage to Violet E. Stoole and together the couple made their home in Marquette. Arnold received his Bachelors Degree in Business in 1956 and began what would become a long business career. He was employed with the VE Ahonen Sawmill in Marquette until 1964 when he purchased the Ishpeming Building Supply. In 1983, he opened Great Lakes Building Supply, running the operation until 1994 when Wickes bought the company. He then retired. Throughout the years, Arnold also owned and operated multiple apartments in Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Marquette.
In 1999, his wife, Violet preceded him in death. He later remarried Mary Hile in May of 2000 and the couple resided in Punta Gorda, Florida, until relocating to Tennessee a year ago.
Arnold possessed a strong Christian character, integrity, and positive attitude. He was a people person whose warmth and humor connected with others. He was generous with both his time and talent, putting his Christian values to work helping others. His faith led him to become actively involved in multiple evangelistic ministries at county fairs in Florida and the Upper Peninsula. He was very active in Living Faith Fellowship Church and in Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship. In his leisure moments, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. However, time spent with family and following the activities of his grandchildren were always a major priority.
Arnold is survived by his wife, Mary Ahonen of Olivehill, TN; his children, Barbara (Nick) Zambon of Marquette and David (Karen) Ahonen of Felch; his grandchildren, Nathan (Shanon) Zambon, Mark (Kristen) Zambon, Jordan (Megan) Zambon, Stephen Zambon, Timothy Zambon, Philip (fiancée, Samantha Mattson) Zambon, Matthew (fiancée, Kira Keaslov) Zambon, David (Stephanie) Ahonen, Andrew (Karissa) Ahonen, and Anna Demeuse; great-grandchildren, Gillian, Claire, Julia, Taylor, Kayden, David John, Natalie, Ethan, Hailey, and Lyla; step-children, Carol, Don, Donna, and Debbie; and his brother, Floyd (Carol) Ahonen of Marquette.
In addition to his parents, Arnold was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet, in 1999, and a brother, Gary Ahonen.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services on Monday, July 12, beginning at 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 noon.
