Motion Picture Director, Screenwriter. She found prominence initially as a collaborator with her husband Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, prior to finding success as a screenwriter and director in her own right. Her father was a civil servant and art dealer, her mother was a painter, Clare spent part of her childhood in Kenya and Florence, Italy, prior to their family's relocation to London when her father took the position of museum curator. She was educated at the Sorbonne in Paris and later the University of Perugia, before getting her break in the film industry as she contributed to the screenplay for the Michelangelo Antonioni picture "Zabriskie Point" (1970). She married director Bernardo Bertolucci in 1978 and contributed the story to the film "Luna" (1979). In 1981, she made her directing debut (also wrote the screenplay) with the short "Couples and Robbers" and distinguished herself when she received a BAFTA nomination for "Best Short." This was followed with "High Season" (1987) which she directed and penned the screenplay and "Rough Magic" (1995) which starred Russell Crowe. She wrote the screenplay for Bertolucci's "Besieged" (1998) and directed and penned the screenplay for "The Triumph of Love" (2001) which earned her a Golden Globes nomination (Italy). Her younger brother Mark Peploe was also a motion picture screenwriter. She died from lung cancer.
