Janet Evelyn Muench Kirman, 90, passed away Friday, July 2, 2021, unexpectedly, at the M. S. Hershey Medical Center.
Janet was born February 19, 1931, in Philadelphia, to the late Kemper P. and Anna P. Muench.
A graduate of Upper Darby Senior High School, Janet was a softball phenomenon and known for her antics. After high school she attended Swarthmore College where she earned an associate degree in business. For 35 years Janet worked as the office manager and accountant for her husband's optometric practice, Shahane T. Kirman, OD and Associates.
Janet was a longtime member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where she faithfully volunteered at The Hummelstown Food Pantry and was involved with Zion's women's groups. Janet loved her Hummelstown Community and she served various Lower Dauphin Booster Clubs, and the Hummelstown Women's Club.
Janet was "The Kokomo Mom." Her door was always open to her sons' friends. It was not uncommon for her to have a house full of kids whom she looked after as though they were her own.
She was an avid Philadelphia, Penn State, and Lower Dauphin sports fan. If Janet could not attend a sports game in person, she would be found listening to or watching it. Seeing the Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, Penn State Football, and Lower Dauphin teams win championships were sporting highlights.
In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Shahane T. Kirman, on November 11, 2011; one brother, Paul Muench; and two sisters, Ruth Mudge and Barbara Smith.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce Taylor Kirman and Mary Richelle "Rickie" Kirman of Lower Paxton Township, Dr. Gary Scott Kirman and Jodi Lynne Kirman of Conewago Township, and Donald Lee Kirman and Dr. Elizabeth Ann Kirman of South Hanover Township; eight grandchildren, Kristin Deanne Moreland, Richard Taylor Kirman, Cara Leeann Kirman, Phillip Robert Kirman, Mitchell Scott Kirman, Joshua Paul Kirman, Nathanael James Kirman, and Olivia Grace Kirman; and a great-granddaughter Evelyn Fay Moreland.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 8, 2021, from 6 to 8 PM at the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown.
Janet's Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 9, 2021, at 11:00 am at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 West Main Street, Hummelstown. Interment will be in the Hummelstown Cemetery.
