On June 6, 1942, Leatha Mae was two weeks away from her seventeenth birthday when she gave birth to a baby girl, who was named Hedy Lamar Shannon.

Hedy Lamar was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and was fathered by a man named John Pleasant, who lived in East Saint Louis, Illinois. Leatha Mae died from syphilis and angina on February 11, 1944, aged 18. While her death certificate states she was buried in Michigan, she also has a headstone in Double Bridges, Tennessee.
