Mark Hurd had a long-storied career in high-tech in Silicon Valley. He spent 25 years at NCR, starting as a junior salesman and ending as CEO, President, and Chief Operations Officer. Then he moved to Hewlett-Packard as CEO and President, and later President of the Board of Directors. Under his management, the troubled company became the leader in sales of laptop computers in 2006, and of desktop computers in 2007. HP continued to grow and its stock price doubled.
His time at HP ended under a cloud in 2010 and he resigned after questions were raised over his relationship with a contractor and his expense reporting.

Hurd immediately joined Oracle Corporation as co-President with Safra Catz, and member of the Board. He continued a previous re-org of the Sales organization and launched a program to expand the sales force by thousands of college graduates. When then CEO Larry Ellison announced he was stepping down in 2014, Hurd was named as co-CEO with Catz, and was in charge of Sales and Marketing, bringing a stronger focus on cloud technology.

He left Oracle in September 2019 on medical leave of absence, and passed away the next month.
