Last Rites Over Body of Tobin DeHymel Impressive
Remains of the Young Driver Followed to the Grave By Crepe Draped Autos
Slow and processional and not at all remindful of the speed that brought his young life to a tragic close was the transfer to their last resting place of the remains of Tobin DeHymel, the young auto racer whom speed on the auto track had made famous and whom speed claimed as its latest victim Saturday evening at the International Fair Grounds. Of speed and the noise of the race track there was not even a suggestion in the somber and dignified incident marking the final exit to the intrepid driver.
Many friends came to view for the last time the boy to whom speed was practically a creed. The chapel at the Sloan & Hagy undertaking establishment was crowded by his friends and admirers. Surrounding the purple plush covered casket were many splendid floral offerings notable among them a blanket of white rose and lilies, a large cross of the same flowers and a design showing a broken automobile wheel and gates ajar.
As the casket was taken to the hearse a band rendered a dirge and Nearer My God to Thee. From the undertaking establishment the body was taken to St. Mary's Church, where Rev. Father Carrier performed the last rites. From the church the body was accompanied by the family of the deceased.
The funeral cortege was a very large one, many of those assisting in the ceremony joining it with their crepe draped automobiles. Interment was made in St. Mary's Cemetery.
The honorary and active pallbearers chosen from among the friends of the dead driver were: Honorary: Carlos Bee, Judge P.H. Shook, Henry L. Haff, Dr. J.H. Bindley and Atlee B. Ayres. Active: Fritz Reuter, Herman Siebert, R.H. Bolster, James Naylor, James Geary and D.B. Pierson.
