Mikal was born to Joseph Tracy Coleman and Theresa Ann Conaway Coleman, the second of their four children. He grew up on the mean streets of The Bronx, New York, during the late 1960's. He entered Army military service in 1972, and was discharged in 1978. Shortly afterwards, he adopted his Muslim name, which means, "Divine Distinguisher of Truth." After leaving the service, he moved to San Diego, California, in order to be closer to his mother and siblings. Mikal was well-known in the San Diego area for his baking abilities. He enjoyed to engage in the sport of boxing, as well as listening to spiritually-enlightening music.
