Early Life: Lela was born August 18, 1937, in the alley behind the old Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, Montana, to Harvey Lysle Shook and Dorothy Lela Gaffney Shook. Lela was raised in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana, attending schools in Hamilton, Baker Creek, Victor, and Darby.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: In July of 1957, she married Gerald Thomas Grewell in Ellensburg, Washington, and together they had Zella Lee Grewell in 1961. They were divorced in January of 1964. Lela married Lyle Charles Johnston in July of 1964 in Salmon, Idaho, and together they had Lyle Charles Johnston Jr. in 1967. They later divorced and she married George Henry Schaffer on January 7, 1977, in Deer Lodge, Montana. Lela loved the outdoors and spent many happy hours with George moving cattle or just riding horses. They also liked to camp. Lela loved to read, sew, and do fancy needlework, but her main love was genealogy. She was a member of the Bitterroot Valley Historical Society and the Bitterroot Genealogical Society. Constance "Lela" Shook Schaffer, of Corvallis, Montana, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021, at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital. She was 83.
