SOUTH BEND - Vernon S. Sutton, 81, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 31, in his residence. Vern was born on August 28, 1926, in Alvin, IL, to the late Irven I. and Vivian (Symmonds) Sutton.

On June 6, 1946, he married Vonna Lou "Von" Streeter in Tokyo, Japan, who preceded him in death on December 12, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Paul,
Anna and Ginny.

He is survived by his five children, Gregory (Judy, MD)
Sutton, MD of Indianapolis, IN, Linda (Gary) Tillman of Bremen, Diane (Tom Searcy) Winn of Mishawaka, David (Lynntia) Sutton of Deerfield, IL, and Sheri (Tom) Donovan of Deerfield; 12 grandchildren, Anne Sutton, Jim Sutton, Gene (Kerri) Tillman, Wade Tillman, Amy (Mike) Kress, Brett
Tillman, Kate Tillman, Hannah Winn, John Winn, Michael Donovan, Carrie Donovan and Alisha Sutton; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Tillman and Macormick Kress; a sister, Martha Mussatto of Macomb, IL; and two brothers, Wayne M. (Bobbie) Sutton of Aurora, IL, and Irving (Mae)
Sutton of Pueblo, CO.

Vern was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where he was on the church council and was a member of the choir. He was
also a member of South Bend Turners, F.O.P. Elks, the Republican Party, and the Westside Amnity Group. He was active in the Diabetes and Parkinson's Association and was a member of the Notre Dame Alumni Association. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity at Illinois Wesleyan. Vern honorably
served in the United States Army in the Counter Intelligence Corp as an investigator during World War II in Tokyo, Japan, during the occupation. He was also the administrative assistant to Mayor Lloyd Allen and director of the South Bend Housing Authority.

Vern's family was his passion. He was a consummate caregiver. He never met a stranger. He touched the life of each person he met in a special way. We love you,
Dad.

Visitation was from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. November 2, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated today, November 3, at noon in Bethany Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, 5302 W. Sample St., South Bend, IN 46619. For those unable to attend the funeral
