The Declaration of Recruit for Daniel F. Smethers has a consent form that says that George William Smethers/Smithers Do certify that I am the father of Daniel F. Smethers, that the said Daniel F. Smethers
is twenty years of age; and I do hereby freely give my consent to his enlisting as Soldier in the Army of the United States for the period of three years. Given at New Albany, Ohio the 22nd day of November 1861. Witness, R. C. Gates, George William Smethers.
The Declaration also says that I Daniel F. Smethers, desiring to ENLIST in the Army of the United States, for a term of three years, Do Declare that I am twenty years and one month of age, that I have neither wife or child; that I have never been discharged from the United States service on account of disability or by sentence of a court martial, or by order before the expiration lf a term of enlistment, and I know of no impediment of my serving honestly and faithfully as a soldier for three years. Given at New Albany, Ohio the 22nd day of November 1861. Daniel F. Smethers, Enlisted at New Albany, Ohio, November 22, 1861, by Captain William Fetterman 18th Regiment of Infantry.

Daniel FRANK Smothers served in the US Army during the CW for the Union with the 18th US Army of Ohio and was wounded several times. He later was promoted to Sergeant, then hurt his back on the way to Tennessee, and was sent back to Ohio to recuperate. He was eventually discharged Jan 18 1864, due to the spine injury caused by a shell, and receiving six gunshot wounds.

September 24, 1866 he is listed in the pension records as filing for an invalid pension.
