Lubbock- 61, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2018. LaNell was born on May 20, 1956 to Eddie, Sr. and Vernell Tates in Lubbock, TX. She attended Lubbock Public Schools and graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School, class of 1974. She pursed her studies at Texas Tech University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Restaurant, Hotel Institutional Management. She wrote two books, Broken But Not Shattered and Waiting On God. LaNell is preceeded in death by her father, Eddie Lee Tates, Sr. LaNell leaves to cherish her memory; her mother, Vernell, three brothers, Eddie Lee Tates, Jr. (Dorsita), Kelvin Tates, and Randy Tates; one sister, Lisa Huey (Corneious); goddaughter, Chezla Stevens; eight aunts, Bertha Sheppard, Ella Roberts, Lula Griffin ( Bishop Willie, Sr.), Princess Nutall, Bertha Tates, Geraldine Tates, Ethel Caldwell, and Ida Mae Nixon; two brothers, James (Clarissa) and Bobby; a host of other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Lyons Chapel Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Visitation will be held at Griffin Mortuary.
