THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, October 24, 1963, page 1, column 4. "CHARLES B. FRENCH. - Charles Brainerd French, youngest and last surviving child of John O. and Ellen Hutchinson French was born May 27th, 1874 at Olin, Iowa. He departed this life on October 16, 1963 at Des Moines, Iowa. He came to Maxwell in 1881 when his father started a lumber yard here. He graduated from the Gutherie County High School in 1897, afterwards attending the Northwestern School of Pharmacy in Chicago, but graduated from the Highland Park School of Pharmacy in Des Moines in 1899. He entered the Drug business in 1899 and then retired in 1949. He was married to Josephine Higbee in 1900 and they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1950. He was an active member of the Maxwell Methodist Church for 75 years, the Maxwell Community Club, Men's Chorus, Iowa Odd Fellows, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, a life member of the Izaak Walton League, and a 40-year member of the Mestholatum Club. He also was a member of the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association and Honorary Past President of the Veteran Branch of that Organization and served both the Maxwell Town Council and the School Board. Preceding him in death were his wife in 1968; a son, Charles Arthur in 1946 and one grandson, Lloyd Clark. He is survived by one son, John O. French of Webster City; two daughters, Mrs. L. T. (Catherine) …"

He had one brother and two sisters and they lived in the Rufus Bullard home, which his dad built in 1882. John O. French had a lumber yard where the present elevator is. He was Mayor and an active man in the community.
Charles worked for Billy Tipton Sr. and Son after school and on Saturdays while attending Maxwell High School in 1894. He graduated in 1897 and took his first year of pharmacy at North Western school in Chicago. He graduated from the Highland Park College of Pharmacy in June of 1899. He worked in several drug stores and bought the drug store in Maxwell in 1900.
On June 6, 1900, he married Josie Higbee in a double ceremony with her twin sister Jennie and Frank Beltz above the Higbee Millinery Store where the present Mini Park is. Mrs. Higbee had five daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. French first lived in the house where Don Elding now lives. There, Charles Arthur and Catherine Ellen were born. He then built the home on Main Street, which is known as the Ed Wickard or Lina Carver home, where John O. French and Josephine French Strother were born. He later bought the big house at 500 Baldwin and moved with their four children. He built two rooms on the west side for Grandma Higbee. It was later used for Charlie, after Mrs French died, when the Strother family moved to town with their four boys. Charlie and Josie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1950 at home. Charlie was a 50 year Pharmacist, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, and C. B. and Josie were 50 year members of the Order of Eastern Star, and he was a 75 year member of the Maxwell Methodist Church.
Charles B. French was visiting his daughter, Catherine Clark and family at the Lone Tree Corner in Des Moines, when he was struck by a car while walking from the motel across to the Clark home. He was killed instantly.
The only child of Charlie and Josie still living is Josephine who lives with her husband, Lou Strother, south of Maxwell. Charlie and Josie had ten grandsons four of whom were James, Kenneth, Steven and Sidney Strother."
