Financier. Theron O. Worth, Jr. of Manhattan died, with his family by his side, on January 19, 2021 at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Cause of death was complications of Covid-19. He was 81 years old. Toby was born on June 22, 1939 in Bryn Mawr, PA to Theron Oscar Worth and Edwina Myrtle Blank. Raised in Houston, TX, he attended the St. John's School. A stand-out athlete, he was Captain of the tennis team and designated "all-league" in Football and Basketball. Toby truly excelled in tennis. He was State Champion of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana and was ranked No. 8 in the United States, USTA, boys 16 and under (1955). Tennis was an amateur sport at the time, and Toby wrestled with the decision to pursue it or go to college. At 17, Toby matriculated at Princeton University, where he was a member of the Ivy Club. He graduated 1960 with a B.A. in economics and moved to NYC to join Citibank as a commercial loan officer to the oil and gas industry. His maternal grandfather was an oil and gas prospector who owned the First National Bank of Cushing, Oklahoma. In 1961, Toby married Merwin Braxton Worth, whom he met on a blind date at Smith College. In 1965, he received his MBA from New York University. Toby had a long career in finance, never losing his fascination with Wall Street and the stock market. Theron Oscar Worth, Jr. hailed from a long line of English whaling captains, the family having arrived in Nantucket in the 1640's. Eventually, Toby's antecedents settled in Bridgehampton, NY, where Toby's grandfather and father are buried. There, Toby learned the game of tennis from his father, and a deep love of sailing and the Ocean, whose bounty provided so much to his ancestors. He was a lifeguard at the Bridgehampton Club and a long-standing member, just as his father and grandfather before him. Toby is survived by his wife of 60 years, Merwin Braxton, his six children and 13 grandchildren, and his younger sister, Courtia Worth of Tillson, NY, and predeceased by his sister Edwina Worth Hatch of Bridgehampton, NY. His remains will be laid to rest at the Brick Presbyterian Church at 91st and Park Avenue, NYC, where he was a Deacon, Elder and 60-year member.
