Singaporean Chief Minister, Politician, Lawyer. He served as the first Chief Minister of Singapore from 1955 to 1956. He was also the founder and first chairman of the Workers' Party of Singapore. Born in the Straits Settlements to a strict Orthodox Jewish family, his parents had migrated to Singapore from Baghdad, where they ran a business. He attended Saint Andrew's School, and later attended Raffles Institution and the University of London. In 1937, after graduating from the University of London, he was called to the bar. He returned to Singapore and became a lawyer. In 1955, he formed the Labour Front, and had a close victory in the 1955 Singaporean general election, becoming the first Chief Minister of Singapore. However, he resigned the position in 1956 after failing in negotiating with the British to attain self-governance. He left the Labour Front in 1957, and later founded the Workers' Party of Singapore. He won a seat in parliament after his victory at the 1961 by-election. He left the party in 1963, and returned to his law career. From 1978 to 1993, he would serve as Singapore's Ambassador to France, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. He died of lung cancer in 1995.
