BOWDOINHAM — Edward D. Abbott, 88, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, following a brief illness. He was a longtime resident of Freeport and more recently of Bowdoinham. He was born June 19, 1909, in Montreal, Canada, the son of Charles N. Abbott of Island Pond, Vt., and Louise Anderson Abbott of Freeport. He attended elementary school in Portland and Cambridge, Mass. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1927 and the University of Maine School of Forestry in 1932. Mr. Abbott married Irene Cushing of Freeport in 1934. She died in 1990. Mr. Abbott was a partner in Small-Abbott Co., moccasin manufacturers, of Freeport. He later worked at and retired from L.L. Bean as a supervisor of the manufacturing section. He was a selectman for the town of Freeport for 10 years, a trustee of the Freeport Sewer District for three years, Civil Defense Coordinator for several years and Freeport town meeting moderator for several years. He was also a member of the Freeport Historical Society, the Wolf's Neck Club, Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, The Ruffed Grouse Society, The Audubon Society and The Nature Conservancy. Mr. Abbott was a family man who enjoyed mountain climbing, hunting, gardening and studying the history of the Civil War. He is survived by three children, Charles Abbott of L'Anse, Mich., Carole Dyer of Bowdoinham and Faith Abbott of St. Charles, Mich.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a stepgrandson. There will be a celebration of his life at a graveside ceremony in the spring. The date will be announced. There will be no visiting hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Freeport Historical Society, 45 Main St., Freeport, ME 04032. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth.
