Jesse W. was one of ten children born to William Henry and Rose E. Tomlinson Backous: Charles Alfred 1880, Lottie M. Backous 1883-1884, George Henry 1885, Samuel J. 1887, Walter G. 1889, Edna B. 1891, Harlesy Earl 1893, Floyd S. 1896, Jesse Wilber 1901 and Elmer Epith 1906 - 1910.

Backous, 60, brother of Sam Backous passed away at Aberdeen South Dakota on Friday Sept. 1. He was born May 31, 1901, at Collins, Iowa and moved to South Dakota in 1909. In 1918 he was united in marriage to Marienne Knudson at Wetonka. He worked in the Elevator at Wetonka for 20 years before moving to Aberdeen in 1955. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two daughters and three brothers. Survivors are three sons, Eldon, Duane of Aberdeen and Henry in the U S Army in Germany; three daughters Mrs. Ray (Beverly) Pletd, Aberdeen, Mrs. Harley (Nancy) Bacaus of Walla Walla, Wash., and Juanita Backous in the Air Force in California; two brothers, Walter of Walla Walla and Sam of Maxwell; the one sister Mrs. Pete Peterson. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 5 at 2p.m. at the Presbyterian Church at Wetonka, with burial in the Wetonka Cemetery."
